Blood
The novel Dracula symbolizes blood as life. It is the source of life for all the vampires, and vital for a person’s transformation into the undead. It is a perverse reference to Jesus’s Holy Communion. Where wine represented the blood and life in the Holy Communion, blood literally represents life in Dracula. It gives strength to Dracula, while draining the victim of their life.
The same blood also represents death in Dracula, as seen when Lucy is drained of blood and is dying. The transfusion of blood manages to prolong her death, but fails to save her.
