East vs. West
The theme of east vs. west is very prevalent in the book. East represents tradition and superstitions and beliefs in the unexplained, and west represents the science and technology taking over the world. It was a belief in science, which stopped the characters in the book from considering the idea that creature like vampires can exist. It is also Van Helsing’s belief in the same supernatural that enables others to fight back and stop Dracula from taking over London. Stoker enforces through this book that although science and technology are beneficial to people, old traditions and orthodox beliefs are just as important in defeating evil.
